What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy focuses on correcting the function of the muscles in the face, mouth, and jaw. The four main goals of myofunctional therapy are:

1. Improve Tongue Posture: The therapy aims to reposition the tongue to its correct resting position, which is typically against the roof of the mouth. Proper tongue posture can help with breathing, swallowing, and overall oral health.
2. Encourage Proper Breathing Patterns: One key aspect is to promote nasal breathing rather than mouth breathing, as mouth breathing can lead to various health issues, such as dry mouth, bad breath, higher risk of cavities and even facial development problems.
3. Enhance Lip Function: Myofunctional therapy works on strengthening the lip muscles to ensure they stay properly sealed at rest. This helps reduce the habit of mouth breathing and supports overall oral health.
4. Correct Swallowing Patterns: The therapy focuses on retraining the muscles involved in swallowing to prevent habits like tongue thrusting, which can negatively affect dental alignment and lead to issues like open bites.

These goals contribute to improved oral health, better facial development, and enhanced overall function of the mouth and jaw.

In addition to the primary goals, myofunctional therapy offers a variety of additional benefits, including:

1. Improved Speech: By strengthening the muscles of the mouth and improving tongue position, myofunctional therapy can help with speech disorders, such as lisps or difficulty pronouncing certain sounds.
2. Better Posture: Proper tongue posture and improved muscle coordination in the mouth and jaw can have a positive impact on overall posture. This is because these muscles are connected to the rest of the body, including the neck and spine.
3. Relief from TMJ Dysfunction: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, which cause pain and discomfort in the jaw, can be alleviated through myofunctional therapy by correcting jaw and tongue positioning.
4. Improved Dental Alignment: Myofunctional therapy can help prevent and treat issues related to dental malocclusions (misaligned teeth). Correcting habits like tongue thrusting and mouth breathing can complement orthodontic treatments, leading to better long-term results.
5. Enhanced Breathing: Myofunctional therapy encourages nasal breathing, which can help reduce the risk of respiratory issues like sleep apnea, snoring, and asthma. Nasal breathing also helps with proper oxygen intake, improving overall health.
6. Improved Sleep Apnea: Strengthening oral and facial muscles can help prevent or reduce symptoms of sleep apnea by improving airway function and preventing airway obstruction during sleep.
7. Improved Digestion: Since proper swallowing patterns are emphasized in myofunctional therapy, this can promote better digestion, as the initial stage of digestion starts in the mouth with proper chewing and swallowing.
8. Facial Aesthetics: Over time, myofunctional therapy can positively influence facial symmetry and appearance, especially when combined with orthodontic treatment. It may improve the alignment of the jaw and facial muscles, leading to a more balanced, youthful look.
9. Reduced Snoring: With proper tongue posture and improved airway function, individuals may experience a reduction in snoring and other sleep-related issues.
10. Prevention of Orthodontic Relapse: After orthodontic treatment, myofunctional therapy helps maintain the results by preventing relapse caused by habits such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, or improper swallowing.

Depending on the severity of the OMDs, your program can take anywhere between 12-16 sessions.

The price of the program may vary between $1,200 and $1,865. This fee does not cover the extra charges you might have to incur if you proceed with a tongue tie release or an oral appliance. TMJology provides a 10% discount when you pay for your program in full. Each program also offers monthly payment options of $400 per month.
NOTE: While we will initially have weekly sessions, there may be occasions when therapy needs to be moved into bi-weekly sessions or postponed. This could occur if you require a referral to a specialist, such as an ENT or airway-focused dentist, to address airway or sleep-related concerns. Additionally, if you are pursuing a tongue tie release, it may be necessary to wait until sufficient expansion of the palate is achieved, allowing the tongue to rest comfortably. Should you undergo a tongue tie release during the program, please note that there will be a 2-3 week break from the regular weekly exercises to focus on post-operative care and stretching.
